The Lemosho route (sometimes split into Lemosho and Shira) begins on Kili’s western flank and is known for its stunning panoramas. This itinerary condenses the climb into 6 days on the mountain by starting at a higher trailhead (the Shira route start), which can be challenging for acclimatization – but it’s an adventurous option for those short on time. You’ll trek across the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic parts of the mountain, with sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and the plains below. Highlights of this route include the dramatic Lava Tower and the descent into Barranco Valley with its surreal Senecio trees (giant groundsels). It’s a relatively high-altitude start, so our guides pay extra attention to your health, ensuring you hike “pole pole” (slowly) to adjust. Over 9 days total, including travel, you’ll tackle steep sections like the Barranco Wall and endure cold nights under canvas. The payoff? Reaching Stella Point at dawn and continuing to Uhuru Peak, knowing you’ve overcome one of the mountain’s more challenging approaches. Lemosho-Shira is less crowded for the first half, offering a true wilderness feel. If you’re fit, up for adventure, and pressed for time, this route provides an epic Kili experience in a shorter frame.
